Shakespeare’s most bloody, ghostly and ghastly characters have broken free of his pages and are haunting campus.
This was an outdoor immersive theatrical experience, with 35 characters in Elizabethan-inspired costumes. One of the biggest challenges was keeping the performers warm in chilly temperatures. I incorporated a lot of wigs and hats to keep people warm. I styled the human characters in more traditional clothing, and I designed more imaginative costumes for the other-wordly beings like Ariel, Titania, Puck, and the witches. I acted as both costume designer, and assistant shop manager on this project, and I directed a team of students to make the masks, style the wigs, create the makeup looks, and drape some of the garments.

Ariel was initially supposed to walk on stilts, but when that idea got cut, I still liked the idea of the ruffly leg covers.

This year’s theme was “Chiaroscuro”, and designers were required to choose a light or dark concept. My design was titled Nature’s Shadow, and showcased the darker side of Mother Nature.
The look was created using papier-mâché, braided paper, hand-rolled paper beads, and origami.

The director wanted a gritty, steampunk style. This was done during the height of pandemic restrictions, and fittings were done via Zoom. To make fittings go more smoothly, I asked the performers to provide some of their own base layers, and then I layered on other costume elements. I used hair extensions with some of them to heighten the style. I made a video makeup tutorial, and performers did their own makeup.

CU Theatre & Dance partnered with Climate Change Theatre Action 2021 in New York City to produce ten brief climate plays by authors from around the world interspersed with fun Cabaret-style musical numbers.
I chose a color palette of “hopeful neutrals” to convey a positive message about the climate, while presenting a unified look. I dressed the cast in simple, contemporary clothing that could be adapted quickly to change characters as the mood switched between silly and serious. I am always conscious of trying to conserve resources, but for this show, we went to the next level. Nothing was purchased new, and everything came from our stock or a thrift store.

Paper dress, designed for Denver’s The ONE Club Paper Fashion Show, benefitting Downtown Aurora Visual Arts.
Winner of the ONE Club Spirit Award.
The theme this year was “Flight: Beyond Wings”, so I chose to design a phoenix rising from the ashes, titled Up In Flames.
The look was created using papier-mâché, braided paper, hand-rolled paper beads, and paper shapes sewn together with a sewing machine.

These costumes were designed to reflect the Art Nouveau time period. To create contrast between the human and fairy worlds, the humans are in neutral black and white or sepia tones, and the fairies are in bright color.

The assignment was to reimagine The Wizard of Oz. I created characters in a Cirque du Soleil-inspired style, with a nod to the Rococo time period.

The suggested theme was a time and place in history, so I chose the works of architect Antoni Gaudí in turn of the twentieth century Spain. I imagined what a dress designed by Gaudí would look like, or perhaps who his muse would be, strolling down the streets of Barcelona.
I hand-cut about 1000 paper circles, and sewed them by sewing machine to create the skirt.
Special thanks to model, Karina Rivera, who donated her time and expertly made my design come to life.

The assignment was to design twelve Romeo & Juliet costumes in Elizabethan style. My goal was to create characters that are relatable to a modern audience, while still remaining true to the period. My color inspiration came from sunrise and sunset skies, with Capulets are wearing warm golden and fiery colors, and Montagues in cool, dusky blues and purples.

The task was to reimagine a classic Disney character's costume in historical, high fashion, and hip hop style. My chosen characters were The Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, and Captain Hook from Peter Pan.

This was my first experience with design for theatre, and I designed and created a dozen costumes for the "Cruelies" in this children's play. The timeline was fast and furious with little time for feedback and revision. Costumes were created by pulling from the costume closet, while adding some new elements from scratch to tie everything together.

This is where all the fun began. I got really into making Halloween costumes for my kids, and realized that I wanted to pursue costumes as a career.
The body was made with Fosshape, and the mask from Wonderflex.
Wonderflex mask, painted with spray paint and acrylic.
The mask and sword were purchased, but I patterned and constructed the rest. The blouse was build into the vest.
I made the hat pattern myself. The jacket was from a store-bought pattern, and I added the applique on the back. I adapted the dress pattern from a store-bought pattern.
I adapted a store-bought pattern for this, and added the faux bustle at the back.
I made the helmet using a pattern purchased from Etsy. This was my first foray into working with EVA foam. I patterned the cape and jacket.
This was made from a store-bought pattern with a few adaptations.
